Students are strongly encouraged to take part in Global Education study away programs that focus on Latino/a populations in the United States and/or that take place in various countries within Latin America or Spain. We also encourage students in the certificate program to enroll in Spanish Service-Learning courses as well as Duke-approved DukeEngage programs focused on Latino/a populations.
These programs and courses vary by semester, so students should visit the Global Education, DukeEngage and Service-Learning websites to see what is currently being offered. These may include:
- Duke in Costa Rica — a four-week, one-course summer program based in Heredia, Costa Rica. In addition to visits to local clinics and hospitals, students have an opportunity to explore the surrounding area and learn about local culture through excursions to sites such as Poás Volcano, La Paz waterfalls, Cabecar indigenous community, Cartago province and Tortuga Island.
- Duke in Madrid — a semester of study committed to a cultural studies perspective. The program aims at improving participants’ Spanish fluency and deepening their understanding of Spain and its many cultures within a global context.
- DukeEngage: Ecuador "Promoting Public Health and Human Services" — volunteering with grassroots and nonprofit community health organizations in low-income neighborhoods of Guayaquil.
- DukeEngage: Peru "Supporting Women and Children in Indigenous Communities" — contributing to the efforts of organizations and schools in and around Cuzco, Peru, that provide outreach and support to indigenous communities, particularly children and families.
- Service-Learning: Latino/a Voices in Duke, Durham and Beyond — where students participate through tutoring and working with Latino students, both adults and children. Sometimes additional opportunities are available to partner with students on group projects, such as an art project with young children.
